Learning How To Deal With Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux is irritating as well as painful, and it’s important to find ways of dealing with it. Otherwise, eating your favorite spicy and acidic foods won’t bring anything but pain in the end. What’s more, learning how to spot the acid reflux symptoms before they get too bad can help to ease pain and let you continue to enjoy your favorite foods and drinks.

In order to do this, let’s talk about the acid reflux symptoms to look out for, and some options for treating your symptoms. Both over-the-counter and prescription options are available as treatments, and will be discussed in further detail as well.

Spotting the Symptoms

Acid reflux symptoms can be mild or very intense, the person experiencing the symptoms and what exactly is causing the symptoms (for example, something that was eaten or drank). Usually painful burning in the chest area that can range from the stomach to the throat is the first acid reflux symptom that is experienced. It’s uncomfortable and can be made worse by drinking water so it’s advised to stay away from water no matter how good it sounds. It is human nature to try and “cool” the burning with water, but it does nothing to make the situation better.

Another acid reflux symptom to look out for is sour stomach. As a result from heartburn, an upset or sour stomach can sometimes occur, even creating a small burning sensation in the stomach.

The good news is that if you can start fighting the at the very first acid reflux symptom, chances are you can keep it from getting worse, you can relieve it some and in many cases, even make it go away altogether!

Taking a prescription medication can help to eliminate acid reflux symptoms altogether, but many over-the-counter remedies can work to keep you from suffering as well. Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta and Pepto Bismol are all good choices and some are more convenient to carry with you than others. The trick is to take your choice of medication at the very first acid reflux symptom in order to control and help eliminate the pain.

Waiting too long can result in no relief and the need to keep taking medication until you can gain control of the pain. In many cases, taking Tums or Rolaids before a meal can also help in eliminating heartburn. In the end, the best way to eliminate is to avoid the foods and drinks that bring it on. This isn’t always possible, so consider trying over-the-counter medication before you succumb to having to use prescription medication.
